ARI lives in a roadside motel. She leaves for work at 10:00 PM,
a waitress in an isolated diner which rarely sees customers. Late
during a crushing winter night, she spots a new customer sitting
at a booth alone. He’s out of place in her environment, thumbing
through a newspaper. Ari refills his coffee. His name is Phil. Phil
creeps her out. ARI TAKES A SMOKE OUTSIDE. Phil joins her,
uninvited. He tells her he’s a photographer on assignment in the
area. He has no family. He gives her his lighter. PHIL HAS
GOTTEN INTO ARI’S HEAD. She takes a second break near
the dumpster, lost. She’s usually comforted by her constant
loneliness, but now those feelings have turned to despair. All of
Ari’s thoughts have turned to the drifter Phil. Maybe he can put
her out of her misery. OVER COFFEE, Ari asks Phil about his
thoughts on the CALENDAR GIRL killer. “He’s left a stain on a
noble profession,” Phil responds. Ari wonders, is that profession
murder or photography? Could Phil be a killer? She invites him
back to her place. At best, he could be the infamous killer. At
worst, she’d get some sex and maybe some companionship out
of the transaction. Alone, she breaks down at the thought of
ending her life. She wants it so badly, her heart is crushed.
LATER THAT NIGHT, she opens herself to him. She lets him in
and hopes for the worst.
